Materialism

"Because he loves me," says the Lord, "I will rescue him"
Psalm 91:14

The Oxford dictionary defines for the word materialism as "a tendency to consider material possessions and physical comfort as more important than spiritual values."

In Mathew 6:34 our Lord Jesus Christ was teaching about materialism in the Sermon on the Mount. He says,

“Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”

Here the Lord clearly identifies the source of materialism as worry about provisions and He commands us not to worry about such things; not to be materialistic.

In 1 Corinthians 7:31 The Amplified Translation explains materialism very well:

"For the outward form of this world [its present social and material nature] is passing away."

In addition, Jesus said in Luke 12:15:

"Then he said to them, “Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.”

The Lord is very clear. He does not want you to focus on material possessions as they are temporary and will not bring lasting joy. Instead, focus on building up riches in Heaven by winning souls.

“Those who are wise will shine like the brightness of the heavens, and those who lead many to righteousness, like the stars for ever and ever.” Daniel 12:3
